Should I worry about weight?

We understand that many people may feel worried about their weight. 

We suggest trying to focus on the positive changes that you can make to your lifestyle instead of worrying. This is because worrying often makes you feel worse, while it doesn't actually change the situation. 

Here are a few suggestions to start with:

  • Recognise that being overweight or obese is bad for your health. The risk to your health is increased with greater levels of overweight and obesity. However, losing small amounts of weight can still have significant benefits to your health, no matter your starting point.
  • If you (or any of your family) are overweight or obese, it is useful to learn what you can do about it, even if you choose to do nothing now.

 

Weight Concern strongly recommends that people who are overweight or obese should try to:

  • Eat a healthy diet and take regular exercise - this will help keep you fit, whatever your weight
  • Avoid putting on more weight
  • Aim to lose weight

Weight Concern also recommends that parents should help their children to avoid being or becoming overweight or obese. Please see the section on children and families for more information in this area.

And remember - even if you are happy with your weight, eating well and taking regular exercise will help improve your health and protect you from coronary heart disease, diabetes and strokes.
